THE GOSPEL Something To Be Obeyed
The gospel is the good news that God sent His Son into the world to save sinners. What are we supposed to do with the gospel?
“That’s easy. Just believe it.”
That is an incomplete answer. According to the Bible, we are not only required to believe the gospel, we are also required to obey it.
In Romans 10, Paul talks about the importance of preaching the gospel, then adds, “But they have not all obeyed the gospel” (vs. 16).
Peter says judgment begins at the house of God, then asks, “What shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” (1 Pet. 4:17).
Paul answers Peter’s rhetorical question by saying that when Yeshua returns, He will take “vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel” (1 Thes. 1:8).
The word obey is not difficult to understand. It simply means to do what you have been commanded to do. God gave commandments and He expects His people to obey them. Nowadays commandments are not stylish or trendy, but commandments are what we are required to obey. People do not obey suggestions, or recommendations, or advice. They obey orders, commandments, requirements. We are required to obey the gospel, not just believe it.
